Razan Zeitouneh Wins Anna Politkovskaya Award

A Syrian human rights activist who has risked her life to report on atrocities committed under the government’s continuing crackdown on protesters, has been honoured in the name of the murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
London-based rights organisation, Reach All Women in War (RAW in War) bestowed its annual Anna Politikovskaya award on Razan Zeitouneh on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the reporter’s murder – October 6.
No award ceremony was held as Zeitouneh is currently in hiding.
Mariana Katzarova founder of RAW said that Zeitouneh, who has risked her life in breaking through the government’s media blackout to report on the brutal crackdown in Syria, reminded her strongly of Politkovskaya.
“When the violence against civilians by the army and security forces in Syria began [in March], [Zeitouneh] turned into a journalist. She became one of the essential voices coming out of Syria about the daily torture and killing of peaceful protesters in the country,” Katzarova said.
Trained as a human rights lawyer, Zeitouneh founded the website Syrian Human Rights Information Link in 2005.
Written in Arabic and English, it has served as one of the few sources of information on killings, arrests, and human rights violations committed during the continuing, six-month-old assault on anti-government protesters.

Syrian Political Activist Suhair Atassi

Suhair Atassi
The Syrian militant for human rights Suhair al-Atassi (aka Souhair al-Atassi) has been arrested several times in the past, and is frequently harassed by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
It is still unclear at this moment whether Suhair Atassi is really a legitimate activist or one with a hidden foreign agenda. Her positions are confusing to many.
Although Suhair Atassi refused to take part in the meetings of the Syrian National Dialogue Committee she however called for the boycott of the meeting held on Monday 4 July 2011 at Cinema St. Germain in Paris under the name of “popular movement in Syria” which was organized by La Regle du Jeu (The Rule of the Game) magazine and website which is headed by Bernard-Henri Levy, one of the staunchest defenders of Israel along with other French figures that are noted for being “Israel”s friends in France”. She called Syrian participants such as Ammar Qorabi (in exile in Cairo, he heads the National Organization for Human Rights), Omar Al-Azm (anthropologist, professor at the University of Ohio), Adib Shishakli (grand son of a former Syrian president in USA), and Georgette Alam to also cancel their participation in the conference… This could either be because she is a grand nationalist, or simply because she understands how such a participation would reveal the true nature of the unrest in Syria, a foreign conspiracy (Syrian opposition members in foreign countries doe not have such a good reputation in the eyes of the majority of the Syrians in Syria).
Souhair al-Atassi was one of those who called for civil disobedience through her blog and youtube videos, asking Syrians to burn their bills and not to pay their taxes.

Saja al-Zoabi Wins Arab Women Organization Award

According to news Syrian scholar Saja al-Zoabi was awarded the award for best Arabic book on women for her work “The Role of Women in Home Economy.” By the Arab League-affiliated Arab Women Organization . The award was presented during a ceremony held recently in Oman. The book is composed of two parts. The first is theory which covers the definition of home economy and its fields and the role of women in various relevant fields. The second part is a practical analysis of the status of women based on samples from Daraa governorate to identify the degree of women’s participation in home economy.
Al-Zoabi said that she tackled this issue due to her concern with home economy which is relatively new in Syria, using several resources to write a reference point for those who wish to study home economy in Syria. The Arab Women Organization organizes a general sciences contest every three years to encourage research and studies related to the work conditions of women in the Arab world.

Syria has Banned Burka from the Country’s Universties

Now SYRIA bans the burka… as British female Cabinet Minister says freedom to wear Muslim veil is a right. The Education Ministry’s ban comes as similar moves in Europe – and calls for one in England – spark cries of discrimination against Muslims.
An official told local media: ‘Our students are our children and we will not abandon them to extreme ideas and practices.’
Syria is not a Muslim country. An official at the ministry says the ban affects public and private universities and aims to protect Syria’s secular identity. But the burka – the most concealing of the Islamic veils, in which women are forced to peer out at the world from behind a mesh mask – and the niqab, a veil that covers the head and mouth but leaves the eyes exposed – have both been banned.
The niqab and the burka are not widespread in Syria, although they have become more common recently. The secular, authoritarian government has recently tried to curry favour by rallying to the cry of moderate Islam at home. But it remains wary of Islamic fundamentalism, which is a threat to its power – especially in education. Last month, hundreds of primary school teachers who wear the niqab were moved to administrative jobs, local media reported.
The move came as the pressure was turned up in Britain and across Europe for as similar ban. A British Cabinet Minister today delivered a staunch defence of a woman’s right to wear a burka. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said women were ‘empowered’ by the freedom to wear the face coverings. Her comments came after her colleague, Immigration Minister Damian Green, resisted demands from within the Tory party to ban the burka, which critics claim is a symbol of the oppression of women. Mr Green said a ban would be ‘rather un-British’ and run contrary to the conventions of a ‘tolerant and mutually respectful society’. This is despite a YouGov survey which found that 67 per cent of voters wanted the wearing of full-face veils to be outlawed.

Friends, today we are going to publish an article about dress designing sent by one of our readers from Syria. Maira is a dress designer from Syria , she started her profession as wedding dress designer one year ago. Today she wants to dedicate some wedding dress purchasing tips to all arab girls. She says that there are certain moments in life, which you wish to cherish forever and live it again and again. Wedding ceremony is one such occasion which remains with one’s memory till the end of time. Everyone wishes to make their wedding ceremony so beautiful that everyone remembers and it also sails as a happy memory in everyone’s thoughts. With a wedding ceremony there are lots of other things that are attached. Maira says that the most highly anticipated parts of planning for a wedding is the opportunity that the bride has to go shopping for the perfect wedding dress. But, often this can become a very stressful endeavor as well. Stress often creeps in as time constraints and money issues press in and sometimes these things make it challenging for a bride to choose the designer wedding gown that she wants.
For this Maira suggests that most marriage dress shops, especially the ones that will carry an inventory of designer gowns, will have a bridal consultant on hand. These professionals are specially trained and have years of knowledge that you can lean on as you endeavor to find the perfect marriage dress for you.

What Is Hijab? A Message For Arab Girls

Shahirah Rahim belongs to Aleppo and student of graduation.  Shahirah wants to describe something about hijab. She tells that despite the negative perception and stereotype surrounding the hijab in the west and other parts of the world there has been a massive surge in Muslim women wearing hijabs. There has been a considerable rise in non-Muslim women converting to Islam and wearing hijabs who have studied Islam with objectivity despite the negative hype surrounding the hijab. Many Muslim women and converts to Islam have come to love hijabs and feel very proud to adhere to the concept of hijab. The women were questioned about the attitude that men had towards them after they started wearing hijabs and the response was that it had a positive impact and men treated them more with respect and dignity.
Hijab” is also frequently used specifically to mean a headscarf worn by a Muslim woman. In this case, it most often refers to a square scarf which is folded diagonally and worn over the head to cover the hair, ears and throat, but not the face. The word used in the Qu’ran for a headscarf is “khimar”, which might be better to use when referring to headscarves in general, as many people argue that this use of “hijab” is incorrect, and it can certainly lead to confusion. Women that are regaining their identity and role in society, are now wearing the Hijab and are embracing its concept of liberation. They are taking their lawful places that Islam had awarded them fourteen hundred years ago. In fact, the western women had no rights nor did they have rights over their husband. Not only were woman the property of their husband but so were their possessions.

Sabeen Badr Writes about the History of Maaloula

Sabeen Badr is one of our regular readers from Damascus. Some days ago she visited  world’s most historical place Maaloula with her university fellows. Sabeen wants to share little about this historical place. She tells that Maaloula, in Aramaic, means “entrance”. Maaloula is some 50 kms from Damascus. On entering Maaloula a visitor would feel engulfed in an enchanted world of magic and legends that soon overwhelms the world of reality. Houses clinging to the rocks as birds’ nests cling to lovely trees will fascinate you. There are two important monasteries in Maaloula: Mar Sarkis and Mar Taqla. Enter Mar Sarkis Monastery, and you will find yourself in the midst of history. This monastery was built in the 4th century on remains of a heathen temple, with a simple, plain appearance. It was named after St. Sarkis, one of Syrian horsemen who fell in the reign of king Maxi manus in 297. This monastery still maintains its solemn historical character.
